Ministry Makeover: Recovering a Theology for Bi...

Ministry Makeover examines the decline within the church, especially the United Methodist Church (UMC), and some causes for this decline. It calls for a reforming of United Methodist structure and polity by drawing more attention to the value of the bi-vocational model of ministry and a re-visitation of the Wesleyan/United Brethren view and historical perspective. This book establishes a solid theological foundation upon which to build this shift and it goes a step beyond typical ecclesiology (the study of the church) to identify Trinitarian theology as the basis for the practice of the church. In turn, this text reveals bi-vocational ministry and support of new congregations as not only a viable option, but also arguably the model towards which the church is heading. These insights will transform the church and lead to more effective church ministry with respect to resources, structure, and reach in a post-Christendom world context. Picardo uses Embrace Church (Lexington, KY) as a case study, and incorporates his experiences into this text in order to show how these implications have played out in a true bi-vocational, church-plant context. 1. 'The finest statement of the Christian message I have read!' -Dr. Barry Bailey, retired pastor of one of America's largest United Methodist churches (First UMC, Ft. Worth) 'An exceptional challenge by a devoted Christian scholar!' -Dr. Robert Richardson, retired executive, Mercer University, Macon, Georgia There are truths and falsehoods, treasures and trash, in what we call the Holy Bible and 'Christianity.' Separating those elements is not always easy. Through the centuries, our churches have added a multitude of beliefs and practices to the life and religion of Jesus of Nazareth. Some of those beliefs and practices are appropriate expressions of Jesus' mind and spirit. Others are far from, even caricatures of, what Jesus would want. For eighty years I have learned and taught about 'Christianity,' at personal, community, church, college, university, state, national, and international levels. I have learned that there are many 'Christianities,' some loving, some hateful, some intelligent, some stupid, some healing, some hurtful. If we are going to live our Christianity-in our small and big worlds-may God help us get it right!

In 1999 GBHEM published the first book about CR-CC appointments, Witness from the Middle: Korean-American Pastors in Non-Korean Local Churches in The United Meth- odist Church. This was the first publication describing the experiences of racial-ethnic clergy who had been serving in CR-CC ministry in the denomination. In my research, I point to two elements that have been missing denominationally but that are crucial to a successful CR-CC ministry: (1) a definition of CR-CC appointment and (2) a pretraining both for clergy and congregations when- ever CR-CC appointments are made.6 GBHEM initiated leg- islation in 2008, and The UMC came up with the definition of a CR-CC appointment in The Book of Discipline and required a pretraining for clergy and congregations.

Counseling and Pastoral Care in African and Oth...

The coming of Colonization and Christianity to Africa and other indigenous cross-cultural contexts was a ''mixed bag'' of pros and cons. The impact of the advent of the two has had a lasting effect being felt even today. It created issues of bi-culturalism and bi-religiousness in personal and religious identities that counselors and the church need to address when working with people from these contexts. There is the existence of deep cultural trauma (including psychological and spiritual scars) needing healing for those living in most of these post-colonial contexts. The Western counseling approaches and Christian rituals need contextualization. A counselor or pastoral caregiver with an integrative consciousness is required to address the psychological and religious identity conflicts existing in African and other indigenous cross-cultural contexts. ''Mucherera has identified counseling and pastoral care issues within the African Shona and other indigenous contexts with which individuals and families are struggling after generations of the advent of Christianity and colonization. His analysis of the impact of colonization and Christianity in post-colonial indigenous contexts is one of the best I have read. . . . In his book, Mucherera offers clear guidelines for counselors and pastors struggling with, and needing insight in, providing counseling and care. A must read for those serving individuals and families from and/or in post-colonial indigenous contexts.'' --Bertha M. Mucherera, Director of Kids Parenting Forever ''Since I met Tapiwa Mucherera while he was in seminary, he has been fascinated with the idea of how western healing therapeutic practices could be suited to an African context. Due to his interest as a scholar and practitioner, he has found a way to contextualize western healing therapeutic practices with African cultural healing practices. His work represents how cross-cultural pastoral therapeutic and healing practices can work together to facilitate therapeutic and healing practices in an African context.'' --Edward P. Wimberly, Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling Tapiwa N. Mucherera is Professor of Pastoral Counseling at Asbury Theological Seminary. He is author of Meet Me at the Palaver and Glimmers of Hope. He is editor of Pastoral Care, Health, Healing, and Wholeness in African Contexts: Methodology, Context, and Issues, and has also contributed chapters to several academic books. An ordained United Methodist Church (UMC) pastor, he has served several churches in Zimbabwe, Iowa, Denver, and Kentucky. Mucherera is serving on the Board of Ordained Ministry of the Florida UMC Annual Conference, and serves on the ACPE National Board.

Churches of all types around the country are struggling. The more programs they try the more evident it becomes that there is no quick fix or secret formula to help them out of their rut. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Movement, once said, 'The way to keep a Methodist alive is to keep him moving.' It is time to recapture this simple yet profound truth and get back to the basics of making fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. The authors developed and launched a highly successful pathway to discipleship in their church (Morning Star UMC, in St.Louis). Here, they show others how to create a successful discipleship pathway for their own particular contexts, based on the principles developed at Morning Star. Willard and Schreiner share the process of developing a discipleship pathway that meets individual people where they are. They provide examples of each element and practical instruction on how to plan, implement and sustain the discipleship pathway. The authors are teaching this material in conferences around the UM connection, from New Mexico to Missouri. They also share examples of how the pathway works in other churches.
